John Ellie "Hawk" Hawkins, 73, passed away at home in Chesapeake, Virginia on Saturday, December 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving children.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia on July 7, 1950, John was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Mary Jane "Janey" Hawkins, née Euler.
John was the son of the late U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. (Ret.) Floyd Albert Hawkins and his wife of 59 years, the late N. Hazel Hawkins, née Saunders.
John was a satellite truck operator and broadcast engineer at WTKR-TV Channel 3 in Norfolk, Virginia for over 35 years before retiring in 2016. He traveled all over the country covering breaking news from elections to sports to weather-related events, especially during the annual mid-Atlantic hurricane season.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted "big sister," Judy Wilkinson, née Hawkins, and his five children: Heather Hawkins, Lindsey Hawkins (Rachelle Weems), Tyler Hawkins, Emily Allen née Hawkins (Tyler Allen), and Kelsey Hawkins (Joey Marable), all of Chesapeake, Virginia, as well as beloved grandchildren Penny Allen, Hazel Allen, Eli Marable, Jayce Marable, Kameron Waff, Lily Spencer, and two great grandchildren, Oliver and Milo Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
